Number Pooling

A shared inventory of phone numbers that a business or carrier uses to assign numbers dynamically across campaigns, users, or locations.

Number pooling is the practice of maintaining a shared pool of phone numbers that can be dynamically assigned and reassigned across users, marketing campaigns, call tracking purposes, or service lines. Rather than purchasing a dedicated number for each use case, a business draws from a shared pool — reducing cost while maintaining the ability to track and route calls by source or purpose.

In call tracking, number pooling is used to dynamically assign a unique number to each website visitor. When a visitor arrives, they're shown a number from the pool; when they leave, the number is returned to the pool for the next visitor. This enables session-level call attribution — connecting a phone call directly to the digital session, keywords, and marketing source that drove the visit.

In business phone deployments, number pooling allows carriers and VoIP providers to manage number inventory efficiently, ensuring numbers are available in target markets without over-purchasing. For businesses expanding to new markets, pooled numbers can be provisioned rapidly without waiting for number assignment from a local carrier.
