RCS — Rich Communication Services
The next-generation messaging standard that replaces SMS with richer features: read receipts, high-res images, group chats, and interactive buttons.
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a communication protocol developed as the successor to SMS. While traditional SMS supports only plain text up to 160 characters, RCS enables a messaging experience closer to modern app-based messaging platforms: high-resolution images and video, file sharing, read receipts, typing indicators, group messaging, and interactive elements like reply buttons and carousels.
For businesses, RCS Business Messaging (RBM) adds branded sender verification (customers see the company name and logo instead of a phone number), rich media support, and call-to-action buttons that can open websites, initiate calls, or trigger other actions directly from the message thread. This makes RCS significantly more effective for marketing and customer engagement than traditional SMS.
RCS requires support from both the sender's and receiver's carrier and device. As of 2024, RCS is supported natively on Android devices and was added to iPhone with iOS 18. Universal adoption is still in progress, but RCS coverage has expanded dramatically and is expected to become the standard for business messaging. Zonitel monitors RCS availability and will integrate RCS business messaging capabilities as carrier infrastructure matures.
