You send an appointment reminder, an estimate follow-up, or an order update. Your customer says it never arrived. Before assuming they ignored it—or sending the same text again—check what happened to the original message. A missing reply alone does not tell you whether an SMS was delivered.
| Status | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Sent / submitted | The message moved into the sending process. This alone is not proof of delivery. |
| Failed | A failure or rejection was reported. Check the associated error. |
| Unconfirmed | No final delivery confirmation is available. This is not a confirmed failure. |
Five checks before you resend
1. Find the original message and its error
Match the recipient, sending number, and date/time. Confirm that a scheduled message was actually due to send. Review its status and any error before choosing a fix. “No reason reported” means the cause is unknown; it does not prove a carrier spam block. A delivered result also does not mean the customer read the text.
2. Verify both phone numbers
Check the destination for a typo or an outdated contact number, and confirm that it can receive SMS or MMS. Make sure you selected the correct business line and that messaging is enabled on it. A number that can receive phone calls is not necessarily ready to receive your text or attachment.
3. Check registration or verification
For U.S. business messaging, ask your provider whether your local number is associated with the appropriate active A2P 10DLC campaign, or whether your toll-free number has the required verification. These are different processes. Registration helps establish legitimate traffic, but approval does not prevent every carrier block or guarantee delivery.
4. Respect consent and opt-outs
Review whether the customer agreed to receive these messages and whether they later unsubscribed. Do not retry an opted-out recipient, switch numbers to bypass their choice, or treat a delivery problem as permission to contact them again. If permission is unclear, resolve that before sending more messages.
5. Review the content and any attachment
If the error indicates filtering, review your message, links, and sending pattern with support. For MMS, check the file type and size against the limits in the composer you are using. Individual and group messages may have different requirements. Do not repeatedly resend unchanged content or rotate numbers to get around a block.
Find failed or unconfirmed messages in Zonitel
In your Office Portal, open Analytics → Undelivered Messages. Select the date range and start with Failed & unconfirmed. Narrow the results by sending number, user, contact, or message text. Review Status and Error, then use Open the conversation to see the original exchange. Opening it does not resend anything. An empty filtered report does not prove every message arrived.
This view covers SMS and MMS—not WhatsApp or other social channels. Zonitel helps your team locate the affected message and investigate the next step; carrier restrictions may still require support coordination.
Retest once, or ask for help
After correcting an identified issue, send one authorized test to a phone you control and check the result. If the cause remains unclear, give support the sending and receiving numbers, timestamp with time zone, exact error, and message identifier if available. Share these privately, with unrelated customer details removed from screenshots.
